“A death sentence? But it was an accident!” Arara’s cries echoed off the walls of the carriage. Yegra winced and covered her ears. The Elders flattened their ears to their heads.

“It’s not an accident if it’s preventable.” Darach looked disgusted. “At your age you should be in total control of your abilities.”

“I am in control. None of those things hit me.” Arara barked back before falling into the seat next to Darach with a huff.

“Very true. Instead they hit Prince Sels.” Darach flicked Arara’s nose. “Why didn’t you drop them to the ground? Or fling them back at Kerka?”

Arara rubbed her nose and scooted away. “Stopping things is hard. Deflecting them is easier.”

“Alright, then why not fling them back at Kerka?”

Arara cringed at the thought of saying that she didn’t know how. Instead she stared at the claws on her feet as they swung with the motion of the carriage. Darach snorted. The end of Johka’s cane tapped the floor.

“This is bad. The Prophecy...you must become the sedyu-bonded.” Johka trailed off, glancing at Yegra next to him.

“Don’t.” Arara curled up into a ball, ears pressed to her head. Bad enough to let Sels down. She didn’t want to hear how she’d failed

everyone in the Empire. At least she wouldn’t live to see the awful results of her failure.

“What’s this Prophecy you mentioned?” Yegra took Arara’s paws, holding them in her lap. Arara’s tail wagged and she squeezed Yegra back.

Johka glanced at the other Elders before looking away. “Nothing for your ears, girl. The matter is sensitive and we must be careful. The Queen’s spies are everywhere. For all we know you’re one.”

Yegra’s jaw clenched, but she relaxed when she noticed Arara’s gaze.

<They said the Empire is on the verge of destruction and that only I can stop it.> Arara sent to Yegra.

<Destruction? From what?>

<I, uh, didn’t stick around to find out.>

<So that’s why you were running like your tail was on fire when I found you.> Yegra yipped and Arara giggled along with her.

Darach’s head snapped around and his eyes narrowed. <Arara, she cannot be trusted. Do not discuss the Prophecy with anyone.>

<What? I’ve known Yegra since we were both tiny puppies. Of course we can trust her.>

<No, we do not know where she was or what she was doing today. Say nothing until she has been cleared.>

“I know Yegra has nothing to hide. We can clear her right now.” Arara snapped outloud, giving Yegra’s paws a reassuring squeeze.

“Now is not a good time-” Johka began.

“Actually,” Darach cut him off and nodded at Arara. “This is the perfect opportunity to begin her training.”

“It is?” Yegra blinked and looked back and forth between Arara and Darach. “What does deflecting rocks with her mind have to do with proving I’m not a spy?”

“Deflecting rocks?” Darach snorted. “There is more to the Yaka’s fearsome reputation than just the ability to force-push objects with the mind.”

“Yaka?” Yegra’s eyes widened and she stared at Darach, pupils gleaming in the deepening twilight. “What does that have to do with Arara?”

“Now, to prepare yourself, it is best to be touching the subject.
